Longino, NOTEDATE 24-Aug-10: rainforest; excavated area along trail with vertical clay banks; Pheidole nest, 5mm dia. circular hole, small rim of particles, tunnel led uphill to about 5cm dia. disk-shaped chamber with abundant workers, brood, an alate queen; hole at back of chamber, in same plane as chamber, was straight blind tunnel 3-4 cm long; I saw colony queen run into this tunnel, stay there for a while as I collected material from the main chamber; as I continued to open up main chamber, queen ran out of tunnel and tried to escape.
