Taxonomic history

[Cryptopone also described as new by Emery, 1893h PDF: 240.]
[Type-species not Amblyopone testacea Motschoulsky, 1863 (now Stigmatomma testaceum (Motschoulsky, 1863)), unjustified subsequent designation by Emery, 1911e PDF: 88; repeated by Wheeler, 1911g PDF: 161; Wheeler, 1922: 780; Donisthorpe, 1943g: 636; Kempf, 1972b PDF: 90; Taylor & Brown, 1985: 28.]
[Note: it is apparent that Cryptopone testacea (Motschoulsky, 1863) (based on a queen) and Cryptopone testacea Emery, 1893 (based on workers) are not congeneric. Wilson, 1958g PDF: 360, stated that Cryptopone testacea (Motschoulsky, 1863) is, “almost certainly not the species described by Emery as Cryptopone testacea Emery, 1893… it is proposed that Amblyopone testacea Motschoulsky, 1863 [Cryptopone testacea (Motschoulsky, 1863)] be left for the time being as a nomen dubium, and the description by Emery, 1893a be accepted as the original one for Cryptopone testacea”.]
Cryptopone in Ponerinae, Ponerini: Emery, 1895l PDF: 767; Ashmead, 1905c PDF: 382; Wheeler, 1910a PDF: 135; Emery, 1911e PDF: 88 [subtribe Ponerini]; Forel, 1917 PDF: 238 [subtribe Ponerini]; Wheeler, 1922: 650; subsequent authors; Bolton, 1995b: 25; Bolton, 2003 PDF: 44, 161.

CryptoponeHNS, n. gen .

Operaria: Clypeus carinatus, margine antico late arcuata, acuta, edentula. Mandibula; angusta, margine masticatorio mide obliquo, 5 - dentato. Oculi nulli. Laminae frontales breves, approximate. Antennas 12 - articulatae, clava 4 - articulatu. Thorax suturis distinctis. Pedunculus abdominis nodiformis, versus tertiam partem altitudinis superficiel abdominis anuas insertas. Pedes crassi, breves, articulo tarsorum primo tibia multo breviore; calcaria longe pectinata; unguicuti simplices.
