Biology:
The biology, ecology, and behavior of the North American species of
Liometopum were reviewed by
Hoey-Chamberlain et al. (2013)
Workers are generalist scavengers and predators, and also tend various plant-feeding insects for honeydew.
Identification:
In the context of the
North American Dolichoderinae,
Liometopum is readily recognized by boxy mesosoma ("thorax") with an continuously convex profile, i.e. the metanotal groove is not impressed. In addition, workers are continuously polymorphic and often have conspicuous foraging behavior.
