Overview:
The subfamily consists of a single genus,
Aenictogiton,an enigmatic army ant genus known until recently only from males. It is found exclusively in tropical regions of Africa.
Taxonomic Notes:
Major recent phylogenies (e.g.
Brady, Schultz et al. 2006) indicate a sister relationship to the monogeneric family Dorylinae.
