Comments:
J. Longino, 19 Mar 2014: The types of this species are a bit of a muddle. Mayr described
P. cameroni in 1887, based on Ecuadorian material he received from Peter Cameron. Cameron later (1891) described the same collections as
P. monticola, based on material collected by Edward Whymper, from the following localities: Cayembe village [Cayambe] (9320 feet); Penipe to Riobamba (9000 feet); and Panecillo, Quito (10,000 feet). He realized his mistake and synonymized
monticola under
cameroni the next year. Wilson (2003) examined material in the Mayr collection, establishing as lectotype of
cameroni a major worker from Ecuador, "De Penipe a Riobamba" (one of the Whymper sites). AntWeb has an image of a BMNH major worker of
P. monticola. The specimen has a holotype label, but the original description is of a syntype series from multiple collections, and no lectotype has been designated. Also, this imaged major worker does not have locality data, so it is unclear which of the three syntype collection series it came from. Another imaged BMNH specimen is a minor worker from the Cayembe series. At this date AntWeb does not have images of the lectotype of
P. cameroni, but it is figured in Wilson (2003:176). The imaged major worker of
P. monticola could be from the same collection series as the lectotype, or from one of two other somewhat distant localities.
