Taxonomic History (provided by Barry Bolton, 2022)

Leptothorax spininodis Mayr, 1887 PDF: 617 (w.m.) BRAZIL (Rio de Janeiro) or CHILE (Valparaiso). Neotropic. Primary type information: Type-material: lectotype worker (by designation of Kempf, 1959d: 428). Type-locality: indeterminate: either Brazil: Rio de Janeiro (G.R. v. Frauenfeldt), or Chile: Valparaiso (G.R. v. Frauenfeldt). Type-depository: NHMW. Secondary type information: Paratype-material: 1 paralectotype male. Paratype-locality: same as for lectotype. Paratype-depository: NHMW. Type notes: Mayr says the specimen originated in “Rio de Janeiro oder Valparaiso”, Novara Reise. As there are no later records from Chile, Brazil is the more likely type-locality. AntCat AntWiki HOL
