Neotropical Region: Americas, Aragua, Atlántida, Barinas, Belize, Central America, Chiapas, Coclé, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Ocotepeque, Panama, Petén, South America, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela, Veracruz

Distribution Notes:

Southern Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Venezuela.

Biology:

Occurs in mature lowland wet forest; found in Winkler samples of sifted leaf litter and rotten wood. Lattke found a nest in rotten wood.

Identification:

Like a robust version of elongata with clavate, not flagellate gastral setae.

Comments:

Longino notes, 9 Nov 2013: In Central America, Strumigenys elongata, pariensis, spathula, and morphospecies JTL022 form a single DNA barcoding cluster with subclusters. Strumigenys spathula is morphologically distinct but has discordant DNA barcode data. A Chiapas specimen and a Cerro Cahuí specimen of spathula are distant by DNA barcode, about 5% sequence divergence, but look the same. The Cerro Cahui specimen clusters closer to a Nicaraguan specimen of pariensis.

Specimen Habitat Summary

Found most commonly in these microhabitats: 24 times ex sifted leaf litter, 1 times Ex hojarasca, 1 times Ticoporo Forest Reserve. Dense second growth with few larger trees. Collected most commonly using these methods: 17 times MiniWinkler, 6 times MaxiWinkler, 2 times Winkler, 1 times Maxi Winkler, 1 times search.

Elevations: collected from 145 - 1189 meters, 292 meters average
