Formica fusca Linnaeus, 1758 PDF: 580 (w.) EUROPE. Palearctic. Primary type information: Primary type material: holotype (?) worker. Primary type locality: none given, “Habitat in Europae”. Primary type depository: unknown (no material known to exist (Yarrow, 1954a PDF: 232)). Type notes: 1) No indication of number of specimens is given. 2) Linnaeus, 1761 PDF: 426, gives the type locality as Sweden, accepted by Yarrow, 1954a PDF: 232. 3) One Linnaean specimen is cited in LSLC by Day & Fitton, 1978 10.1111/j.1095-8312.1978.tb00012.x PDF: 196, but it is not known if this is type material. Identification:

The silky field ant formica fusca is a large carpenter like ant. The body is jet black, gaster has short silver hairs riming the segments. The gaster is curved in giving a circular appearance from above.
