Biology:

Inhabits forest floor of lowland rainforest. Known mainly from Winkler samples.

Identification:

Combined length of head and closed mandibles 1.75-2.2mm; petiolar node as seen from the front or rear with apical margin distinctly concave, the two free corners forming angles or produced as teeth; second segment of antennal funiculus at least twice as long as broad; compound eyes less than 0.08mm greatest diameter.

Comments:

The minans type is from Lombardia, Honduras. Brown (1978) based his concept of A. minans on a single specimen he obtained from "rotten wood in rain forest near the bridge over the Rio Toro Amarillo, west of Guapiles, Limon Prov., Costa Rica, in early March 1966." The specimen agreed well with Mann's description of the type. Multiple specimens are now known from the Atlantic slope of Costa Rica and lowland rainforests of the Caribbean coast of Honduras.

Longino note, 9 Nov 2013: DNA barcoding shows A. minans being the same as the ubiquitous A. mayri. They are very similar to A. mayri in shape, size, and sculpture, differing in yellow color and much smaller eyes. Even though A. mayri is common in Winkler samples, I have no nest information. Could A. minans be a specialized reproductive caste of A. mayri? I do have a normal dealate queen of A. mayri from Chiapas, Mexico.
