  • Forested bog-like habitat but on slope, many small diameter trees, sclerophyl, some Agathis; dense peat-like layer, root mat about 50cm deep, on top of pure light-colored sandy soil; abrupt transition from peat layer to sand; conical clumps of moss and duff on all tree bases, intervening spaces of bare leaf litter; looked like usually much wetter, dry now, upper moss clumps on trunks dry, inner lower portions of clumps and deeper peat down to sand layer moist but no standing water. Winkler sample. 4 mesh sacks filled. [This sample dominated by a few species of small, yellow ants. The most abundant was a small yellow Pheidole. Also abundant were yellow Crematogaster and Carebara. Next in abundance were Pseudolasius. Small ponerines moderately abundant. Strumigenys very low density compared to samples from surrounding forested habitats; only about 25 Strumigenys workers in entire sample.]
