Taxonomic history

Forel, 1893c PDF: 438 (q.).
Junior synonym of Camponotus badius: Emery, 1896j: 375.
Revived from synonymy: Bingham, 1903 PDF: 346.
Current subspecies: nominal plus Camponotus saundersi krama.

J. Longino, 25 Sep 2014: The "bursting" Camponotus in Borneo often burst when captured, exuding a gummy material [Maschwitz, U., and E. Maschwitz (1974). Bursting workers: A new means of defence in social Hymenoptera. Florida Entomologist 57:230.] These are appearing in the literature and on the Web under the name C. saundersi. Images of Camponotus badius (Smith 1857) [an unresolved jr. homonym] from Singapore and C. saundersi Emery 1889 look identical. Emery (1896) synonymized saundersi under badius. Bingham (1903) listed C. saundersi as valid, with no reference to Emery's synonymy, and Bolton treated this as a revived taxon. The majors and queens have cylindrical phragmotic heads. There is an older name, C. cylindricus (Fabricius 1798) that was based on a queen from Borneo. Based on my own very limited collecting there are at least two species in Borneo, so there is probably a whole complex of species in need of revision. I am identifying all of these as Camponotus cylindricus group.
