O. berthoudi occurs in the eastern part of South Africa. Solitary foragers are termite specialists. Colonies are distributed across several nests (=polydomy) separated by 1-75 m. Winged queens do not exist, several gamergates (=mated reproductive workers) reproduce instead. Foreign males visit underground nests to mate with young workers.
