Tropical Central and South America (Brown 1976). Costa Rica: throughout in wet forest to 900m.
This is a large, aggressive species that nests in large epiphyte clumps or dead branches, from the low arboreal zone to the subcanopy. It usually occurs in the shaded conditions of mature wet forest.
