Costa Rica (upper elevations of Cordillera Central and Cordillera de Tilaran; type locality is "La Palma," near Bajo la Hondura).
This species occurs in cloud forest and montane wet forest habitats. It is arboreal, nesting under epiphyte mats in the canopy. Colonies can be large.

Found most commonly in these habitats: 42 times found in montane wet forest, 25 times found in cloud forest edge, 10 times found in cloud forest, 7 times found in wet forest, 2 times found in cloud forest branchfall, 4 times found in primary cloud forest, 2 times found in edge of cloud forest and pasture, forest old secondary or disturbed primary, some big trees on rock piles, 1 times found in secondary cloud forest, 1 times found in wet forest edge, 1 times found in along main road through cloud forest and pasture.
Found most commonly in these microhabitats: 25 times ex relict tree in pasture, 3 times nest under epiphytes, 5 times ex canopy tree, 1 times nest in epiphyte mat, 1 times under moss mat, 1 times under epiphytes in canopy, 2 times under epiphytes, 3 times pan trap, 1 times Cloud forest.
