Pheidole cataphractaHNS new species

Etymology L cataphractaHNS, fully armored.

Diagnosis A member of the punctatissimaHNS group easiliy recognized by the very long propodeal spines, which are about as long as the basal face of the propodeum anterior to them.

Major: dorsum of head completely carinulate except for frontal triangle and mid-clypeus; humerus subangulate; all of mesosoma and petiole foveolate and opaque.

Minor: almost all of head, as well as all of mesosoma and petiole, foveolate and opaque; humerus with protuberant blunt oblique angles.

Measurements (mm) Holotype major: HW 0.94, HL 0.96, SL 0.54, EL 0.14, PW 0.46. Paratype minor: HW 0.46, HL 0.50, SL 0.50, EL 0.10, PW 0.32.

Color Major: concolorous yellow except for head, which is dark yellow with a slight reddish tinge. Minor: concolorous medium yellow.

range Recorded from only two collections in Valle Department, Colombia.

Biology Unknown.

Specimen Habitat Summary

Found most commonly in these habitats: 13 times found in montane wet forest, 1 times found in 25yr old second growth and primary forest, 2 times found in mature wet forest, 1 times found in wet forest.

Found most commonly in these microhabitats: 1 times nest in dead stem, 3 times Hojarasca, 1 times New second growth veg. behind house; bananas, Piper, tall grass. Colony in a liv, 2 times ex sifted leaf litter, 1 times bajo de M/03, 1 times Sobre Vegetacion, 1 times nesting in foliar pouches of Tococa-like plant, 1 times Entre trampa M/01 y M/02, 1 times bajo de M/13.

Collected most commonly using these methods: 6 times Malaise, 3 times Mini Winkler, 2 times flight intercept trap, 2 times miniWinkler, 1 times Berlese, 1 times search, 1 times Sweeping.

Elevations: collected from 300 - 1000 meters, 510 meters average
